We have two different numbers, so we can use two different variables: X , Y
Difference merely means subtraction, so we write:
X - Y = 18
Now, we show their other relationship:
X = 4Y
Since the X is already alone, we can quickly substitute it into the first equation:
4Y - Y = 18
3Y = 18
/3 /3
Y = 6
Now, we substitute back into the 2nd equation:
X = 4Y
X = 4(6)
X = 24
