Okay, stop holding down the keys and watch closely:
You have two different numbers, but since we know their relationship, we need only one variable and some sleight-of-hand:
Smaller number: N
Larger number : N + 1
Now we translate from English into the wonderful world of math language:
2 (N + 1) - 3(N) = 5
2N + 2 - 3N = 5
-N + 2 = 5
-2 -2
-N = 3
-N / (-1) = 3 / (-1)
N = -3
So: the smaller number N is -3 and the larger number N + 1 is -2. It may sound crazy, but if you plug them into the question they give the right answer.
