How is this problem calculated?

Your weekly paycheck is 25 percent less than your coworker's. Your two paychecks total 700. Find the amount of each paycheck.

x = coworker's paycheck

 

0.75x = your paycheck (i.e. 25% less than your coworker's paycheck)

 

x + 0.75x = 700

 

1.75x = 700

 

x = 700/1.75 = 400

 

0.75x = 0.75(400) = 300
