PreAlgebra Help Needed

Question

Rover is five years older than Fido. Three years ago, Rover was one year less than twice as old as Fido was then.  How old are they now?

Let x = Fido's age

Let x + 5 = Rover's age

x - 3 = Fido's age three years ago

x + 5 - 3 = Rover's age three years ago = x + 2

 

2(x - 3) = x + 2 - 1

2x - 6 = x + 1

x = 7  years

X + 5 = 12 years
