If there are only these 3 given parts of the journey, then the 2 km walk must be 1/4 of the journey, since the other parts add up to 3/4 of the journey.

 

d = total distance

 

d/4 = 2 km

 

d = 8 km

 

So he went 4 km by rail, 2 km by car, and walked 2 km.
