Math, microeconomics or criminal justice
stretch or compress a parabola.
y=x^2
y=2x^2 are two parabolas one thinner than the other.
or maybe more obviously
y=(1/100000)x^2 and
y =1,00000x^2
the 1st is a nearly flat line, close to y=0, the x axis
the 2nd is a nearly vertical line, close to x=0, the y -axis
the two parabolas intersect at the origin, They're virtually two perpendicular lines intersecting.
congruent means enlarge the one figure or curve where the shape remains the same.
enlarge a circle, x^2 + y^2 = 1 to x^2 + y^2 = 2^2. the 2nd circle is larger than the 1st circle, but exactly the same shape.
take a right triangle, 3 by 4 by 5
enlarge it to 6 by 8 by 10. both triangles are the same shape, they're congruent, one is larger than the other, but they have the same angles, the same ratio of sides, the same shape.
but compress or stretch a parabola, they have different shapes, and are not congruent.
