West is LEFT ( negative x-axis)

 

North is UP (positive y-axis)

 

South is DOWN ( negative y-axis)

 

30 degrees EAST of SOUTH means 

you start at south ( negative y-axis)

and move the compass needle for the angle

30 degrees TOWARDS East (counter-clockwise)

 

This creates an angle in quadrant 4, such that

(1) 60 degrees BELOW  the positive x-axis

(2) 30 degrees counterclockwise from the negative y-axis
