If you think about an airplane in the air the plane can make 3 motions: roll, pitch, and yaw

Roll is the ability for the plane to rotate around the Fuselage  "think barrel roll"

yaw is the left right turning while the plane is flat.  think of the way a boat turns.

Pitch is the up/down motion of the planes side view. think going up and down a hill or roller coaster.

 

Pitch can also be applied to sine waves.
