Melissa is helping her dad build a walkway in their backyard. The walkway will be 54 feet long and 1.5 feet wide. The local hardware store sells tiles which are 1.5 by 1.5 feet and come in boxes of 12. How many boxes of tiles do they need?

First of all, you need to figure out the area you are trying to cover.  Since the walkway is 54 by 1.5, simply multiply the numbers to get the area.  54 x 1.5 = 81 ft².

 

Now you need to figure out how much area each tile covers.  Since they are 1.5 by 1.5, simply multiply the numbers to get the area: 1.5 x 1.5 = 2.25 ft²

 

In order to figure out how many tiles you need, just divide the total area by the area of a single tile:  81 ÷ 2.25 = 36 tiles.

 

Since tiles come 12 to a box, just divide the number of tiles by 12: 36 ÷ 12 = 3 boxes
