The sum of two integers is 45 and their difference is 13

Let x and y be the two integers (say x is the smaller)

 

x + y = 45  (1)

-x + y = 13  (2)

 

Add (1) and (2) (when you add equations you add both sides):

 

 2y = 58

   y = 58/2 = 29  —>  x = 16 (from (2))

Check:

    16+29 = 45 (ok)

   -16+29 = 13 (ok)
