1. Underline key words and numbers.
First bill second bill= 4x −74
2. Let x=the amount of the student loan 74 less than 4 times her student loan
Total of bills= first bill + second bill= $486
3. Use substitution: $486=x + (4x-74)
Simplify by adding the x's to the x's and numbers to numbers. $486= 5x−74
You want to isolate the 5x on one side and the numbers on the other. Add +74 to both sides and solve for "x."
