P=2 (L+W) is the formula for the perimeter P of a rectangle in terms of its length L and width W. Solve this formula for L in terms of P and W.

Divide both sides by 2.
P/2 = L + W
Subtract W from both sides.
P/2 - W = L
L = P/2 - W = (P - 2W)/2
