I love math, and I love to teach it.
Hello, Regan,
I don't think you are stupid. Let me help you with some examples, so that you understand the steps:
10= 25% x_______?
1) Underline or highlight the key words and numbers or percents in the problem: For example, 10 is 25% of what number?
2) Ten is part of the whole. 10= 25% x__whole (larger amount)? Usually, change percents into decimals or fractions, such as 25/100 since percent means part of 100.
3) You can set up a proportion as follows: Part/whole = Part/whole 10/x = 25/100
4) Cross multiply: 10 * 100= 25*x 1000=25x Now divide both sides of the equation by number next to x, the missing value or whole, and you will have the answer: 1000/25 = (25/25) x 40=1x 25/25 =1
5) You can work your problem like this. There are other methods. I hope that this example helps. Susan C.
