How do you solve 8-2*3+10?

Question

If you solve this according to the Order of Operations you would:

 

multiply:  2 * 3 = 6

 

add:  6 + 10 = 16

 

subtract:  8 - 16 = -8

 

What am I doing wrong?

add: 6 + 10 = 16                          add :  -6 + 10  =  4

subtract: 8 - 16 = -8                     subtract :  is wrong

What am I doing wrong?                add :  8 + 4  =  12   correct  answer

You should not be subtracting the 10!

 

Once you solve the 2*3 = 6 which should be your first operation you are left with 8 - 6 + 10

 

This is not the same as 8 - (6 + 10) which is the operation you are performing.

 

Simply subtract 6 from 8 then add 10:  8 - 6 + 10 = 2 + 10 = 12

Hey Alex! When you're using the order of operations, multiplication/division and addition/subtraction are done in order from left to right.
1) 8 - 2 * 3 + 10
2) 8 - 6 + 10
3) 2 + 10
4) 12

What happened in your example is that when you went from step 2 to step 3, you actually performed 8 - (6+10), but in the problem you are only supposed to subtract the 6 since there are no parenthesis.

when you have two operations that have the same preference level, you do them from left to right, same direction that we read

 

so when you get 8 - 6 + 10 you should do 8 -6 first, then add 10 last
