Imagine that "hours worked" are the x-axis and Earnings ($) are the y-axis. You are given two (x,y) points, (1,9) and (4,36). As you move to the right on the x-axis, from 1 hour to 4 hours, do the earnings go up or down? If they go up, the slope is positive. If they go down, the slope is negative. If the earnings are the same, the slope is zero.
You can also compute the slope, m, given that you have two points on the line, (1,9) and (4,36):
m = (36-9)/(4-1) = __________
