The area of a square is found by squaring one of its sides, (A = s 2). A certain square has an area of z 2 + 18z + 81. Factor the trinomial to find a side of the square.

     Given:    A= s²         A= z² +18z +81

 

1)  What factors times itself will give you "81," but when added together will give you 18 of your middle term?

Since all three terms have a plus sign  beside them, you can only have plus signs.

 

A= (z+_____) (z+_______)= s*s= s²

 

 

2) Note:  You are finding a formula, so whatever z is will change the value of the area.
