Kathryn, we solve this like there is a = instead of a <, but with one exception.

 

-2x - 2 < -9

Add 2 to both sides to get -2x < -7

                                       5

 

Now, we have to divide both sides by -2/5.  How do we do that? We multiply by -5/2.

 

When we divide by a negative number, the sign changes, so we end up with x > 35/2.

 

To check your answer, pick something greater than 35/2, like 40/2, to make it works in the equation.
