The VP of Human Resources conjectures that the mean annual salary of All the employees is 54,000. Is this conclusion necessarily correct?

the vp of human resources of a large company learns that the mean annual salary of all femal employees is 50,000. However, the mean annual salary of all male employees at he same company is 58,000.

Mean of females:  $50,000

 

We cannot conclude that the mean salary of all employees is $54,000

because we need to know the number of male employees and number

of female employees.  If the numbers are skewed toward one sex or

the other it will change the mean of all employees.

If there are mostly male employees the mean will be higher than

$54,000.  If there are mostly female employees the mean will be

lower than $54,0000.  If they are roughly equal in number then the

overall mean will be near $54,000
