James, to get an idea of .030 inch, look at a ream of paper. It has 500 sheets of paper. Measure its thickness, it is a couple of inches, but it varies a lot depending on the weight (Cheap copy paper is called 20 pound, paper good enough for two-sided printing is more like 40, card stock ranges from 65 to 100.)
now divide (number of inches)/500,
and you’ll get a decimal fraction, probably different than .030.
still, one sheet of that paper will give you a concrete feeling for a thickness of .030 inches.
