The width of a rectangle is one half its length. The perimeter of the rectangle is 54 centimeters. What are the width and length of the rectangle?

let the width be W.  Then, reading the problem,  the length is 2W.  The perimeter, P, say,  is the sum of all sides. Hence P = W + 2W + W + 2W = 6W.  We are given that P = 54.  So 6W = 54. W = 54/6 = 9. The width is 9 cm.
