Hi, Jamal!
Let's translate into "mathese"
The jar has eight more quarters than it has dimes
(which is to day, there's a number of dimes, and there are eight-more-than-that quarters)
so Q = D + 8
The value of the coins is $5.50
So the value of the quarters plus the value of the dimes is $5.50
value of quarters = $0.25 * Q
value of dimes = $0.10 * D
($0.25Q) + ($0.10D) = $5.50
Now solve by subbing D+8 for Q!
Can you get it from there? Try and see (more below if you can't.)

Okay, so (0.25 * (D + 8)) + (0.10*D) = 5.50
(0.25D + 2) + 0.10D = 5.50
0.25D + 2 + 0.10D = 5.50
0.35D + 2 = 5.50
0.35D = 3.50
D = 10
Q = D + 8 = 10 + 8 = 18
Check your work!
10(0.10) + 18(0.25) = 1.0 + 4.5 = 5.5 = 5.50
Correct!
Hope this helps!
