The length of a rectangle is five inches more than the width; the perimeter is 34 inches. Find the length and width.

L = w+5

 

P = 2(L+W) = 34

L+W = 17

 

W+5+W = 17

2W + 5 = 17

2W = 12

W = 6 inches width

 

L = W + 5 = 11 inches length

 

Check:  P = 2(L+W) = 2(17) = 34 inches
