An observation:

In basic algebra, a linear function has the form

y = mx + b

But when we took our course in linear algebra, a linear function f(x) was defined as a function that satisfies:

f(cx) = cf(x), where c is a scalar
f(x1 + x2) = f(x1) + f(x2)

So the upper level math student who took linear algebra could answer this as TRUE, while the basic algebra student would answer it as FALSE.  Since this question was posted as a precal question, then we should answer it as FALSE, since the student will not have been exposed to vector spaces and linear transformations.
