Shania goes on vacation and is traveling from Nashville to Jacksonville, a distance of 563 miles.She travels the distance going an average speed of 65 MPH. However, in Atlanta, she stops for a 1.5 hour lunch. How much time does it take Shania to get to Jacksonville in minutes?

d = vt. where d = distance, v = speed(mph), t = time (hour)

 

The time she need to get to Jacksonville is, t = d/v,  which is 563/65 = 8 43/65 hours

Taken 1.5 hour lunch, 8 43/65 + 1 1/2 = 10 21/130 hours.

 

10 hours = 600 min, and 21/130 hours = 21/130 * 60 = 9 9/13 min

Adding two, 609 9/13 min or about 609.7 min.

From the way the question is posed it would seem that the stopover time in Atlanta is not included as part of the calculation for the average speed.

 

What you need to do here then is set Total Time = Driving T + Stopover Time lunch).

 

The driving time is simply the distance traveled (563 miles) ÷ average speed (65 mph).

 

Perform this calculation and add it to your time spent at lunch to get your answer.  Then change hours to minutes.

Traveling time from Nashville to Jacksonville = distance/speed = 563/65 = 8.66   hours

                                                                                     Lunch in Atlanta       1.50   hours

                                                                                   Total time in hours  =10.16  hours

                                                      Total time in minutes = 10.16 x 60  =  690.60  minutes.

 

(If you carry more decimals in 563/65 = 8.661538, say, then you get 690.69 minutes)
