The total number of boys and girls is 52. There are 6 more boys than girls. How do I write these equations?

I have a math teacher that explains nothing and I am not good at this. Please help!

Nicole, slow down and think about what it says.

 

If b = the number of boys and g = the number of girls, then b + g = 52.

 

If the number of boys is 6 more than the number of girls, then b = g + 2.

 

Now, since we have b = something, we can plug that something in for b in the first equation.

 

g + 2 + g = 52

 

Any variable with no number in front of it is 1 of those, just like we don't call you 1Nicole.

 

2g + 2 = 52

2g + 2 - 2 = 52 - 2

2g = 50

2g/2 = 50/2

g = 25

 

b = g + 2

b = 25 + 2

b = 27
