Andrew's explanation is correct.  But old thermodynamics books have equations that say log when they really mean ln (i.e. loge).  I noticed that in Kittels' thermodynamics book, which though old, remains popular, with subsequent editions.  I do not know if the latest edition edited log to say ln.  In any case, keep in mind that not all books use the same notation, which can cause some confusion.

In 1683 Jacob Bernoulli examined continuous compounding interest.
Starting with 1 (dollar?) the ending amount approached 2.7182818284590452353602874713527 as time increased without bound.
