Since you mention proportions:

1 : 2 :: x : 4

4 = 2x           product means/extremes

2 = x

 

Yet you should know by grade 7 that 4 divided by 2 is 2!

You can buy 2 jars for $4....

 

As a proportion we have:

1 jar is to $2 AS x jars is to $4

1/2 = x/4

cross multiply

2x = 1(4)

x = 4/2

x =2 jars
