Heat decreases the hardness of the material. In other words, the material becomes weaker as you increase temperatures, making it easier to break.
Look up the heat treatment process "Annealing".
It does matter if a material breaks or not. If it suddenly breaks, then you would not want to use that material for any long-term use.
