This type of problem is looking for you to understand both word problem transition to equations and also relationships.
If we say that x = the number of $10 plates and y = the number of $5 plates, then we can set up the equation that
$10*x + $5*y = $900, but the problem also states that x = 2*y
so we can combine these equations to obtain
$10*2*y + $5*y = $900
Now we can solve this equation for y which again is the number of $5 plates, and then use that answer multiplied by 2 to obtain the number of $10 plates.
