There is a fee of $4 so that means once you get in the taxi you must pay at least $4. So your totsl cost would be 4 plus something. Now how do we figure what that something is? Well it depends on how many miles you travel. For example:
one mile would be 1.75*1
two miles would be: 1.75*2
three miles would be: 1.75*3
and so on
so lets take x as a variable that represents how many miles you travel. In that case totsl cost would be:
f(x) = 4 + 1.75x
again, 4 is the fee that you play, and the second part (1.75x) is the amount you have to pay depending on how many miles you travel. So if you travel one mile, you need to pay: 4+1.75(1) = $5.75
The slope is always the coefficient of x, in this case 1.75. And the y intercept is the fee which is equal to 4.
