a flat rectangular piece of aluminum has a perimeter of 64 inches. The length is 8 inches longer than the width. find the width.

Let the length be L.  Then the breadth is L - 8 inches.  The perimeter is the sum of the lengths of all sides.  So perimeter = 2L + 2(L - 8) = 4L - 16.  We are given that the perimeter equals 64.  Equating, we get 4L = 80. Therefore the length is 20 inches and the breadth is 12 inches.  Check: 20 + 12 + 20 + 12 = 64.
