An electrolyte is an ionic compound that dissociates in solution to produce its constituent ions ad thus acquires the ability to conduct electricity. Non-electrolytes do not associate in solution and, therefore, do not conduct electricity. Strong electrolytes dissociate completely and conduct electricity strongly.
