Mana, g(x) = 63 - 3x is a linear function. x is the independent variable which means that you control what x is. You choose a value for x, like x = 2 and calculate the value g assumes at x = 2. Given g(x), when you choose x = 2, wherever you see an x, replace it with the chosen value, which is x = 2 in this case.
so x = 2,
g(x) = 63 - 3x
g(2) = 63 - 3(2)
g(2) = 63 - 6 = 57
