Work is a scalar because it is the "dot" product of 2 vectors, also called the scalar product.
F = force vector
d = displacement vector
θ = angle between the force vector and the displacement vector
W = work done by force F along the direction of the displacement d
W = F·d = |F||d|cosθ = scalar
W can also be expressed in terms of the components of the force and displacement vectors.
W = Fxdx + Fydy + Fzdz
