A ball is hit by a bat from a point on flat, horizontal ground. The ball leaves the ground with speed V m/s, at an angle of θ above the horizontal, where tan θ = 3/4. The ball lands a horizontal distance of 50m away. Find the value of V.

Use the range (R) relation.

 

R = v²sin(2θ) / g

 

θ = tan^-1(3/4) = 36.87° 

 

2θ = 2(36.87°) = 73.74º

 

v = √[gR/sin(2θ)] = √[9.8(50)/sin73.74°] = 22.59 m/s
