Hi Raichelle, fr0m Columbus, OH. Hope you had a great day at school.
Thanks for connecting with Wyzant...I am here to help.

Great conversion problem. I am going to show you how to set up and work to solve these kind of problems. It would be too easy just to give you the answer, because if you had a similar problem during a test, I wouldn't be there to help you. Okay...here we go.
The problem gives you some information:
the speed of the go-cart is 607,200 feet per second, let's rewrite that:
607,200 ft/sec
So do you understand what the problem is asking of you?
HINT:(I told you I would help) the problem is asking you to convert the speed, which is in ft/sec in miles per hour. The problem is asking you to change...convert the feet to miles and the seconds to hours, RIGHT??
So how do we do that?
Let's start with feet to miles...this is how it is done. Do you know how many feet are in one mile? Another hint: 1 mile = 5,280 ft
So, if I have 100,320 feet, how many is that in miles. Here is the formula
We make a formula in the form of a ratio or fraction, comparing what we know and what we don't know. Like this:
We know this ⇒ 1 mile = x miles ⇐ we don't know this
We know this ⇒ 5,280 feet 100,320 feet ⇐ we know this
Remember in Algebra where we 'cross multiply'? Let's set that up:
(1 mile)(100,320 feet) = (x miles)(5,280 feet) We solve for x miles
100,320 feet•mile = (x)(5,280 feet•miles)
100,320 feet•mile = (x)(5,280 feet•miles) Divide 5,280 ft on
5,280 feet 5,280 feet both sides
100,320 feet•miles = (x)(5,280 feet•miles) Cancel the things
5,280 feet 5,280 feet that can cancel
100,320 miles = x miles Complete the
5,280 division
19 miles = x miles
so 19 miles is the same as 100,320 feet. That is how you convert feet to miles and you can do the reverse with the same formula to convert miles to feet. Try it with some numbers
Here is the second HINT: we need to change seconds to hours, We do the same thing. Do you know how many seconds there are in an hour?
Another HINT: I will show you how to calculate that.
You know there are 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour, so
we set up the ratio like this:[very similar to the feet to miles ratio]
60 seconds = 60 minute = x seconds
1 minute 1 hour 1 hour
(60)(60) = 3,600 seconds which means there are
1 hour 3,600 seconds in an hour
Now all you have to do is use these two HINTS to calculate the number of feet in a mile. And since you know the number of seconds in a hour, include that in your equation. Once you know how to set these equations up you will be a Super Hero at answering them
I hope this helps. If you need any further assistance, feel free to contact me on Wyzant.
