The equation for one pair of shoes is an equation in one variable. You isolate the variable on one side of the equal sign with all the numbers on the other side.

You first clear the parenthesis, combine like terms, and isolate the x.

The result is a value for x. x represents the cost of the first pair of shoes. It will be in dollars and cents.

Once you know the value for x, you can find the value of the second pair of shoes by multiplying x by 3 and subtracting 15.

OK?
