Im trying to figure out the answer for my physics homework that I do not understand at all

If you are looking for the velocity or speed of the object after 5 seconds:

v = u + at

u = initial velocity = 0

a = acceleration = 9.8 m/s² or 32 ft/s²

t = time

 

v = 0 + 9.8(5) = 49 m/sec

v = 0 + 32(5) = 160 ft/sec

 

Just depends on whether you are looking to work in meters or feet

If the object is accelerating downward without air resistance in the earth's gravitational field, its acceleration is a constant 

 

g = 9.8 m/s² = 32 ft/s².

 

There is nothing to figure out here.  Perhaps you meant to ask "what is the SPEED at the end of the 5th second of fall"?
