I need help with a problem I can't seem to get. I've tried over and over again.

I've tried this problem over and over again and have gotten it wrong. Please help me !

 

Question: The width of a brick is half the length, and the length is 1 inch less than four times the height. If the sum of three dimensions is 23 inches, find the volume of the brick.

w = L/2

L = 4h-1

L + w + h = 23

 

From 2nd equation: h = (L+1)/4

 

Using equation 3:

L + L/2 + (L+1)/4 = 23

multiply through by 4

4L + 2L + L+1 = 92

7L = 91

L  = 13

W = L/2 = 6.5

h = (L+1)/4 = 14/4 = 3.5

 

Volume = Lwh = 13(6.5)(3.5) = 295.75 in³
