a(b+c) = ab + ac
In words, if a quantity "a" stands outside a parenthesized binomial (i.e. two terms), this expression can be simplified by multiplying that outside quantity ("a") by each of the terms within the parentheses.
your Algebra textbook may well have this highlighted, with examples.

Sorry, but you are very wrong. My answer is definitive.
In my experience, substituting online learning for traditional learning with a qualified lecturer is often disadvantageous.
Nevertheless, this can work, provided the design of the online course includes reading material. This then carries with it the obligation of the student to read, studying carefully. If that stage of the learning is not done properly, the learning will suffer.
It may be that you are slighting that aspect of the work.
I may suggest, further, that you might have Googled "distributive property" (properly spelled) in order to obtain useful explanation(s), in addition to what instructional aid your online course must have provided.
