Ratio and value of the ratio

Your middle school has 900 studenta. 1/3 of students bring their lunch instead of buying lunch at school. What is the value ratio of the number of students who do bring their lunch to the number of students who do not?

I would like to encourage you to begin work on this by yourself.

First, can you calculate one third of 900 students? That's how many bring lunch to school.

Then figure out how many are left (who do not bring lunch).

Second, do you know that a ratio is a way of comparing two things, by dividing ?

In this case, you want to take the ratio of # of students who bring lunch to the number who do not.

(1/3)(900) = 300 bring lunch, 600 don't

 

300 to 600 = 1:2
