A rich estate; Mr.Phil T left half of his estate to his wife, $30,000 to his daughter, half of what was left to his butler, half of what remained for the care of his gold fish, and the remaining $8,000 to charity. What was the value of the estate.

It is not so much math as it is reasoning.
$8000 was left to charity. This was half of the amount split with the gold fish. So the goldfish got $8000 also.
The total is $1600 that is same amount the butler got (remember the word "half").
The amount so far, $32,000 plus the $30,000 to the daughter was half of the estate.
