A delivery truck is transporting boxes of two sizes large and small the combined weight of large and small boxes is 80 pounds the truck is transporting 65 large boxes and 70 small boxes  if the truck is carrying a total of 5325 in boxes how much does each box weigh

if x = the weight of a small box and y = the weight of a large box, then:

 

x + y = 80

 

65y + 70x = 5325

 

Use the Substitution Method by solving the first equation for y

 

y = 80 - x

 

Now, substitute the above value for y into the second equation

 

65(80- x) + 70x = 5325

 

5200 - 65x + 70x = 5325

 

5x = 125

 

x = 25

 

small boxes weigh 25 lb each

 

x + y = 80

 

25 + y = 80

 

y = 80 - 25 = 55

 

large boxes weight 55 lb each
