The top row of the very last matrix in the solution is equivalent to

(1)x + (0)y = -1

Hence,

x = -1.

Look at the matrix

 5 0 -5
-2 1  6

The top row is equivalent to

5x + (0)y = -5

So multiply the top row by 1/5 to get

 1 0 -1
-2 1  6

The top row then gives x = -1.
