Hi Kaysie. Perimeter is the distance around a shape, right? So we're trying to find out the distance around this rectangle. That means, basically, that we're adding all the sides together to find a total (a sum).
The length is only half and inch, and the width is only a third. That means we're adding fractions here. There are two lengths and two widths to make the rectangle.
Let's add the lengths: 1/2 + 1/2 = 1.
Let's add the widths: 1/3 + 1/3 = 2/3.
So, if we add those together, 1 + 2/3 = 1 and 2/3 (a mixed number, where 1 is the whole number and 2/3 is the fraction.
Drawing the rectangle definitely helps here!
