What is the derivative of 2xy-17=-3x2? Is it -y/x-3?

Well my question asks to differentiate that function to find the slope at the point (2,5).

Point (2,5) is not on the curve.  Test it.
 
2(2)(5) - 17 ≠ -3(2)2
 
Two tutors already pointed out in an earlier posting that the original problem statement is flawed.

So you do not need to put it all in x's.  Plug in x = 2 for your x.  And plug in y = 5 for your y, and you will find the slope of the tangent line at the point (2,5).

Please see comment above about (2,5) not being a point on the curve.  You can evaluate the slope at x = 2, but y ≠ 5 at x = 2.
