1 square mile = how many miles

if I have 706,700 square miles how many miles do I have

Timothy R.

1 Mile.... ! mile x 1 mile is one mile. I feel like I'm being punked. 2 squared miles is 2x2=4 square miles. If you have 706,700 miles squared ten you would have 706700 x 706700=499,424,890,000 miles of land.

Carbon County in Utah is 1,485 square miles, so your telling me that Carbon County is 499,424,890,000 miles big? From Carbon County, Utah, to Salt Lake City, Utah, is only about 40 miles...so I don't think that is even close to the answer.

Jarold, you're not reading correctly. You said: "Carbon County in Utah is 1,485 square miles (correct), so you're telling me Carbon County is 499 billion miles big?" Incorrect. You already had how big it was - 1,485 sq miles. To get the square mileage of an area, you don't multiply the square miles by square miles; you already had your answer. Then you said: "Carbon County to Salt Lake City is only about 40 miles so I don't think that is even close to the answer" Correct; what number do we get if we multiply 40 miles x 40 miles? 1,600 sq miles. That seems pretty close to your original number of 1,485 square miles, right? That's because it IS your number; the number you started out with was your answer all along, no further math needed. If you want to find the exact mile length of each individual side of your square mile, you just find the Square Root of it. And the Square Root of 1,485 = "about" 40 miles. You were multiplying the already-squared mile of your number by itself, not the mile length, which you said was "about 40". The area of 1,485 square-miles IS about 499 billion miles, so you were just doing extra unnecessary math.

Anne M. has ALSO answered the question incorrectly (and as a tutor, which doesn't look great). If you have 706,700 square miles, that does NOT mean that there are "706,700 miles on each side of the square". To get the CORRECT answer to Ken's question of "If I have 706,700 square miles, how many miles does that equal on each side", you just need to find out what the SQUARE ROOT of 706,700 is, which = 840.65. So to answer Ken's question of "how many miles do I have", the CORRECT answer would be "About 840.65 miles". ~840 miles on each side of the square. We can easily confirm this by multiplying 840.65 by itself; So 840.65 x 840.65 = 706,692 square miles.

According to a lot of sources, a square mile is a mile on each side of the square. Where are you getting your definition of a square mile?

Doesn’t it only not make sense because you wouldn’t say you walked a Square mile because it’s not the preferred unit of measure for distance, however you could break down a square mile into miles if you wanted to

A square mile is a square that is 1 mile on each side. How can you walk a square? You can walk around its perimeter which is a distance, and you can wander around inside the square - its area - but you can wander any distance inside a square mile depending on the path you choose and there are an infinite number of paths, so units of area are not a distance.

Phillip P. Why so theoretical? In practical application, if you describe a distance from point A to point B, there is nothing to prevent you from lining up square miles and walking from point A to point B. If the distance between points is 5 linear miles, it will also be 5 square miles between points. The square miles would be aligned along the plane between the two points because you are using them to measure distance. If used for area, they would be spread about.

Thomas. No. A square mile can also be 2 miles long on one side and 1/2 mile on the other; or 4 miles on one side and 1/4 mile on the other; or 1 1/2 miles on one side and 2/3 mile on the other. All of these areas are one square mile. So how many of these shapes would you line up to walk a mile? Units of area are designed to measure area. Units of distance are designed to measure distances. Use the appropriate units.

Phillip P is 100% WITHOUT A DOUBT, POSITIVELY CERTAIN correct. In order to convert square miles into miles in this example, the person would have to be walking in two different directions at the same time. Which we know is impossible. Ergo, it is not possible to convert square miles into miles, by extension. Hope that helps one visualize the concept.

Phillip is correct. To add to John F's logic, I would say : If you walk 20 steps in one direction then it is 20 steps in one line. It doesn't mean to be 20 square steps. The very word "square" indicates that it is a product (multiplication) of two entities having "same unit of measurement". If I have a land of 4 sq. miles then the perimeter of this area differs - depending upon the length and breadth of this land. It can be 8 miles (2 miles x 2 miles land) or 10 miles (4 miles x 1 mile land) and so forth.

Philip is wrong because the question is not clear. If you're trying to convert sq/m to linear miles you need to provide what you would consider the width of travel. If your width is the width of a large atom .5nm then there are 3,218,688,000,000 linear miles in 1 sq/m.

A area of 1 mile by 1 mile is a square mile. A area of .5 mile by 1.5 mile is not a square mile. A square is the same length on all side. Area that is measured with different lengths are called miles squared. Now the perimeter is the same if walked around, both = 4 miles. The area in side is the same just in a different shape but the name is not the same.

If the OP was wanting to convert area to distance, square miles to miles, which seems to be the case - as he clearly asked how many miles (distance) in 706,700 square miles (area) - then I believe Anne M.'s answer is the correct one.

Anne M's answer is actually INCORRECT. I have responded to answer it correctly: If you have 706,700 square miles, that does NOT mean that there are "706,700 miles on each side of the square". To get the CORRECT answer to Ken's question of "If I have 706,700 square miles, how many miles does that equal on each side", you just need to find out what the SQUARE ROOT of 706,700 is, which = 840.65. In order to answer OP's question: "how many miles do I have", the CORRECT answer would be: "About 840.65 miles". That would be ~840 miles on each side of the square. > We can easily confirm this by multiplying 840.65 times itself (to find the Square mileage): 840.65 x 840.65 = 706,692 Square miles. FYI, Anne M's answer is completely wrong.
