The Tampa School District services the Elementary and Middle schools in Tampa. There are 27 teachers teaching in Tampa Elementary Schools and 53 teachers teaching in Tampa Middle Schools. If the total number of teachers in the Tampa School District is 70, how many teachers teach at both the Elementary and Middle school levels?

Add the numbers of teachers in the 2 categories, subtract the number of teachers common to both, and that gives the total number of teachers.

 

27 + 53 - n = 70

 

Solve for n and get

 

n = 10

 

There are 10 that teach in both.
