"Fit the mold" is an idiom (a figure of speech) meaning that the subject being spoken of (The Odyssey) is a match or corresponds to the description (an epic poem). As in... John Doe was a lumberjack, so he 'fit the mold' to be cast as Paul Bunyan in the school play. Or more literally...we poured the batter into the cookie molds shaped like bunnies for Easter.
