Question (edited): At a certain company three times as many men as women apply. 1/10 of all applicants are hired. 1/20 of all men applicants are hired. How many women are hired?
If 3x men apply and x women apply, then for men
# hired = (1/20)3x
# hired = (1/20)3x
and for women
# hired = px where p = probability of a woman applicant being hired.
Total hired: 4x(1/10) = 3x(1/20) + px. This equation can be divided by p throughout, and then
the probability p becomes 1/10.
Therefore Probability that a woman who applies is hired is 1/10.
